Peace Pilgrimage

In November 2003, world-walking Peace Pilgrim Brother Northstar brought a vision of walking from the Four Directions to North America's most sacred lake to pray for, create and celebrate peace.

In 2007, Ithaca-area organic farmer Tom MacDonald will again be the festival's Peace Pilgrim. For a second year, Tom will paddle his red canoe across Oneida Lake and down the Mohawk and Hudson Rivers, carrying our prayer-energized water from the Festival to the 26th International Day of Peace at the United Nations in New York City.

After the United Nations Peace Day ceremony, Tom will pour our prayer water into New York Harbor—the edge of the Atlantic Ocean—the mother of Earth's waters. And thus, from there, our prayers for peace will begin their journey to all the ends of the Earth.

In October 2004, Peace Pilgrims walked and canoed over 300 miles to the first Onondaga Lake Peace Festival.

  • From the west, Tahwehdahqui Printup led eight people from Tuscarora Nation on the Niagara River over 180 miles along the Erie Canal.
  • From the east, John and Cherie Sardella led Peace Pilgrims 140 miles from Kanatsiohareke, a Mohawk settlement on the Mohawk River

In July 2005, John and Cherie Sardella again led Peace Pilgrims to the Festival from Kanatsiohareke.

In September 2006, Peace Pilgrim Tom MacDonald carried prayer water by canoe from the Festival to the International Day of Peace at the United Nations in New York City. Sunday, September 11, Tom began to paddle across Oneida Lake and down Mohawk and Hudson Rivers.

    How We Pray for Peace
    Water is Universal Solvent
    Water is Womb of Life
Water is 75% of Earth's surface
    We are 90% water.

So, we begin with what we are:
    WATER

    We pray for peace
    holding water in our hands,
    focus into the water
our energy, intention and intelligence for peace.

    We collect
    our prayer-energized water
    to pour into Onondaga Lake.
    Peace Pilgrims
    will carry our prayer water
to pour into the Mother Ocean.
